EXCELL
DESIGNING AN EDUCATION PLATFORM FOR PEOPLE CURRENTLY INCARCERATED
MY ROLE
User Research, Wireframing, Low Fidelity and High Fidelity Prototyping through
EMPATHISE. DEFINE. IDEATE. PROTOTYPE. TEST.
THE PROBLEM
THE GOAL
Too many people incarcerated do not have enough support when it comes to rehabilitation and education. Often when they don’t have a skill that is focused in one career field they find it extremely hard to find a job and get onto a good path once out of prison.
To provide an app with step by step goals for people to focus on and carry on learning the skills they need in their field of interest. Also providing support into what jobs their skills would be useful for, meaning they have more of an idea of what to do when released.

PARTICIPANTS
-
2 people who have been previously incarcerated- 1 male and 1 female in 40s
-
Another range of people will empathise with user, have had family in prison or linked in some way to the prison system.

USER QUESTIONS
-
Does the app encourage learning?
-
How easy is the user flow?
-
Is there too much on the site that distracts the users from end goal?
-
Does the app have useful support for after you finish a course?

METHODOLOGY
-
30 minutes
-
Location: Online
-
Unmoderated usability study
-
Then will conduct a survey amongst 10 people to answer the research questions on May 9th 2021.
-
With this survey I will collect the data, analyse and synthesis
-
On May 9th, I will also interview 2 people to collect qualitative data to synthesis.
PAINPOINTS
Dependent learning in prison never works consistently due to lock ins and being overpopulated
Not being able to focus on something I want to learn
Having the motivation to carry on with subject
Not knowing how my skills can help toward a job

ACCESSIBILITY
Using icons within design but would still like to add more
Making the colour accessible. Providing very simple text and a lot of visuals.
A lot of different ways to navigate pages. This meaning to go back or forward there is more than one way in getting to where you need to be.
TAKEAWAYS
Impact:
“If only something like this had been around when I was in prison”. Something like this prototype would be so great for people in prison as would let them understand their value
What I learned:
Besides the course, I saw a small glimpse into what prison life is and how mundane it is when your are consistently looking for something to do when you know you can improve yourself.
